  I booked my lesson with Stingray a couple time throughout my stay in Malibu and he was a phenomenal coach. Being from the east coast and have no knowledge on surfing he had riding real ways with the matter of a couple hours. Most importantly he was patient, calm, and the coolest dude I’ve met. Couldn’t recommend more!

  We cannot say enough about how incredible this surf experience was for our 8 and 7 year old. Stingray is amazing… he hypes them up, teaches safety, technique, and gives them confidence they never had in the ocean. They went from being lukewarm on surfing to now wanting to go as much as possible! We already have another session booked and cannot wait for more. Enormous thanks for this team of coaches for what they do and how much my kids now enjoy surfing and being in the water now. I would give more stars if possible! Look no further than Malibu Surf Coach- a top notch experience.

  Had the best time — definitely the highlight of the trip! It was my very first time surfing, and I definitely lucked out. Our instructor, Stingray, was great at coordinating everything and communicating both before the lesson and while we were out on the water. If you’re looking for a great introduction to surfing, this is the place to go.

  Recently my daughters, ages 6 and 8, took their very first surf lesson with Stingray in Malibu. After searching around and watching the other instructors, below are the reasons why I think he is one of the best instructors in the area: 1. Great and experienced with children: Stingray has been teaching for decades, including children of all ages. He taught several camps to hundreds of children in the east coast before moving to the west coast. 2. He instructs based on the students’ readiness and needs: the best way I can describe his approach is Montessori based- Stingray adjusts based on each individual students’ needs. My daughters have completely opposite personalities and approaches, and at 6 and 8, have varying physical abilities. Stingray was able to flawlessly orient himself between both daughters and used each daughter as examples to teach the other both in and out of the water. 3. You’ll get results: by the end of the first lesson, both girls were standing on their boards. I couldn’t believe my eyes. And after the first lesson, my older one (age 8), was SURFING ON HER OWN WITH NO HELP. She loved it so much, the next day we rented her a surfboard and she was entirely on her own. This is not me trying to “mom brag” or flex…I do believe it takes an incredible instructor to bring out the best in folks. There is no way I could have done any of this on my own. 4. There is a methodology and strategy behind Stingray’s teaching: Being the curious mama I am, I had the chance to watch other competing surf instructors on the beach teach other students, and it was clear Stingray’s approach was different (at least toward my children). He had a methodology to his teaching- very deliberate. Less talk, more action. Within minutes of meeting my kids, they were in the water. The other instructors spent a lot of time out of the water talking in the beginning, in the middle, and niceties in the end. This means less hands on time in the water…where it matters. Within the first 45min I could see the transformation of my kids on their boards…and after their lesson the confidence in themselves grew. Later I learned many of the competing instructors on the beach were Stingray’s former students. :) 5. Stingray will actually talk on the phone and is very responsive: I know this sounds ticky tacky…but it was important to me to talk to a human over the phone (maybe I am old school) before making the investment both financially and personally with my kids in a sport I knew very little about. Before meeting Stingray, I had called multiple surf schools/instructors in the area. The others either did not call back or texted only. Stingray was the only instructor who called me back and answered all my questions over the phone. He also texts too…I just felt like I needed to speak with a live person. 6. This is an investment for a lifetime: are surf lessons expensive? Yes. And after my daughters took their lesson with Stingray, it was clear something inside them unleashed , especially my older one. Surfing may not be for everyone, but as a mother, it is such a joy to see your kid discover something they genuinely like. When I asked my 8yr old what about surfing she liked, she said she felt like she was floating and flying. I never got into surfing, but I imagine that’s what many experienced surfers who love this sport think of it as. If one lesson with Stingray could unleash a lifetime hobby, it makes it COMPLETELY WORTH IT. I hope when we visit SoCal again we can take future lessons with Stingray and his team. Strongly recommend!
