Everyone starts in the whitewater, the foam of already-broken waves in shallow water near the beach. On a large, stable soft-top board, a first lesson covers ocean safety, paddling, and the pop-up, with the goal of riding straight toward the beach standing up. Instructors often push you into waves so you can focus on standing and balance.
A group or private lesson with a surf school is the fastest, safest start: you learn to read hazards (rips, other surfers), how to fall safely, and how to handle the board.
