Longboard in Texas

Texas surf gets underestimated, usually by people who've never waited out a cold front on the Gulf. The waves here aren't Pacific groundswell, they're wind-driven, kicked up by fronts pushing down out of the north and by tropical systems spinning in the Gulf of Mexico. Barrier islands like Galveston Island, Mustang Island, and South Padre Island line the coast with beach breaks over shifting sand, and when a swell finally lines up, there's plenty to ride. The culture matches the conditions: patient, stubborn, and grateful for every good day.

The surfable coast runs from the Upper Coast near Galveston down to the Lower Coast at South Padre. Each stretch has its own character: the city-adjacent breaks off Galveston, the more open and remote setups around Port Aransas, the warmer water at South Padre. Surf schools and camps have set up in these towns, and local coaches spend their days teaching newcomers how Gulf waves actually behave: fast, close-interval, and heavily tied to where the sandbars have moved this week.
