Surf Camp / Retreat in North Carolina

North Carolina's coast is all sand and motion. Its barrier islands throw out beach breaks up and down the Atlantic, from the reliable swell magnets of the Outer Banks to the storm-charged breaks of the southern shore. The sandbars shift, the beaches sit wide open to the ocean, and the result is a coastline that offers slow longboard mornings and heavy shortboard sessions depending on the day and the swell.

The Outer Banks (the thin string of islands running past Nags Head, Rodanthe, and Buxton), is the state's marquee surf zone. Open-ocean exposure and offshore sandbars line up into waves that break hard and hold shape. Head south and the beach breaks around Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, and Emerald Isle on the Crystal Coast and Brunswick Islands switch on with easterly swell and passing tropical systems. Each stretch has its own feel, from the empty, raw sand of Hatteras Island to the shop-lined, walkable surf towns.
