Surfing Progression: First Whitewater to Advanced
Surfing is not certified, but it has a well-understood skill ladder that schools, coaches, and camps use to place students and design lessons. Progress is measured by what you can do, from paddling and popping up to riding and turning, and by the waves you can safely surf, not by a card. The stages below are the common language a coach will use to find you the right session.
Progress depends heavily on time in the water and on surfing waves matched to your level, which is exactly what a good coach or camp arranges.
- 1First-Timer: WhitewaterYour first lessons on broken waves (whitewater) close to shore.First lesson; a few sessions to feel steady
- 2Beginner: Catching Green WavesPaddle out and catch unbroken (green) waves, angling along them.Weeks to months of regular surfing
- 3IntermediateConsistent take-offs, riding both directions, first turns.Months to years
- 4AdvancedPowerful maneuvers in demanding surf; refining style.Years of dedicated surfing
