Delaware's Atlantic shoreline is short, but it punches above its length once the weather turns. The waves run on nor'easters through the cooler months and on tropical systems when hurricane season lines up, breaking over sandbars that fire most reliably from fall into spring. Summer softens everything into smaller, easier waves. The surf towns (Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island), sit close together along the coast, each with its own conditions and its own way in.

The scene is friendly, especially to people just starting out. Surf schools and camps run through the warmer, gentler summer stretch, handing out lessons, board rentals, and guided sessions that make the first paddle-out manageable. The experienced crowd plays a different game: watching for offshore storms and the swell they generate, the kind that turns a mellow beach break into something powerful and worth chasing.
