Longboard in New Hampshire

New Hampshire gets 18 miles of coast, one of the shortest in the country, and packs a stubbornly consistent surf into it. The state sits open to nor'easter swell and hurricane-season groundswell, and from late summer through spring those systems keep the Atlantic breaks working. There's no room here for endless southern-style beaches; the surf clusters tight in the Seacoast region, with Hampton and Rye as the anchor towns for wave riders.

The defining note is cold and grit. Surfers here paddle out into icy water and strong current, which makes it a coast for the well-prepared, especially once summer fades. The trade-off is real: empty lineups and clean, powerful waves breaking against a rugged shore. Because the coastline is so short, the good spots are no secret: they're known, named, and looked after by a local crew that guards them closely.
