Rhode Island surfing
The smallest state punches well above its size in the water. Most of Rhode Island's surf sits along the southern shore, South County towns like Narragansett and Westerly, where the coastline catches Atlantic swell head-on. That exposure builds real variety: soft beach breaks to learn on, and reef and point breaks that will humble a good surfer. The coves and jetties bend to different swell directions and winds, so more often than not there's a corner somewhere holding a wave, even when the forecast looks flat.
The scene is friendly and tight-knit. Narragansett is the beating heart of it, with surf schools and rental shops that run lessons, summer camps, and gear all through the warm season, an easy on-ramp for anyone new. Drop south to Westerly and the beaches empty out, the pace slows down, and you get the same quality of instruction and free surfing with less of a crowd on the sand.
