South Carolina surfing
South Carolina's coast, running from the Grand Strand down into the Lowcountry, is an easy place to fall for surfing. Nobody comes here for size: they come for the beach breaks, which serve up manageable, consistent waves that are close to perfect for learning and drilling the basics. The water is warm for a good chunk of the year, the local crowd is welcoming, and whether you sign up with a surf school or just paddle out on your own, the barrier to getting started is low.
The waves that do arrive mostly ride in on distant hurricane swells through late summer and fall, and on nor'easters tracking up the coast in winter. Those systems can throw overhead surf, especially where jetties and inlets focus the energy. In between, and all through summer, it's small, gentle rollers, longboard weather, beginner weather. Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, and Myrtle Beach anchor the scene, each with a cluster of spots and the shops and rentals to go with them.
