Massachusetts surfing
Massachusetts surf runs cold, rocky, and moody, shaped by a jagged coastline and Atlantic swell that keeps its own schedule. Sandy Cape Cod beaches sit at one end of the range; the rocky shore north of Boston sits at the other, and between them the state serves up conditions for just about every level of rider. It has never been a marquee surf state, but the fall and winter hurricane swells, backed by a stubborn local crew, make it a real one for anyone after empty water and a little New England grit.
Geography does most of the shaping. Cape Cod's outer beaches face straight into the open Atlantic and take the brunt of distant storms, breaking as powerful beach breaks. North of Boston the coast turns rugged, with point and reef breaks that hold bigger swell, the North Shore especially. Even Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, a ferry ride out, hide secluded spots with their own wave quirks, though they usually ask for local knowledge or a boat to reach.
