California surfing
California is where a lot of the surfing world looks first, and for good reason. More than 800 miles of coast run from the Mexican border to Oregon, and the shoreline changes constantly along the way: sandy beach one stretch, rocky point the next, reef after that. Every one of those forms reads swell, tide, and sea floor differently, so there's nearly always a wave working somewhere. The Pacific keeps the energy coming all year, which makes the state about as reliable as surfing gets.
The culture is thick on the ground. It shows up in the surf towns, the tight local communities, and a history that helped shape how the sport is ridden today. Southern California's crowded beaches at Huntington Beach and Malibu feel a world apart from the cold, rugged water around Santa Cruz on the Central Coast, or the big-wave country farther north, each with its own character.
